The Poetry Question

Discovering the Relevance of Words

QOTD – What’s Your Summer Song?

The Bryan Adams song, “Summer of ’69” will always remind me of the summer after my senior year.  It was ’99, but I was never that good at math.  Oh well.

It seems like every summer the radio dubs something “the song of the summer”.  This year it was Blurred Lines, a few years back (maybe more than a few) it was that one with the Yoohoo bottle on the floorboard.

There are poets whose words are particularly seasonal.  Robert Frost just doesn’t seem right when the sun is shining and the air is humid.  Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, to me, must be read in the fall.

For me, the essence of summer has never been captured better than by Gershwin in Summertime from Porgy & Bess.

Summertime,
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high

Oh, Your daddy’s rich
And your mamma’s good lookin’
So hush little baby
Don’t you cry

One of these mornings
You’re going to rise up singing
Then you’ll spread your wings
And you’ll take to the sky

But until that morning
There’s a’nothing can harm you
With your daddy and mammy standing by

Summertime,
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high

Your daddy’s rich
And your mamma’s good lookin’
So hush little baby
Don’t you cry
