Mood Setting Monday – “Young Poets” – Nicanor Para



“Young Poets” is one of the first pieces I share with my students each year. I want them to understand that while they are capable of writing “as you will,” that in order to write well, they must “improve the blank page.” Too many of them feel as if doing a little bit of shit work, is better than no work at all. Unfortunately, doing any bit of shit work, is worse than having not done the assignment. Hemingway wore his “bullshit detector,” and Anne Lammott understands “Shitty First Drafts,” but both require you to put in a good deal of effort beyond the basics.
