The Poetry Question

Discovering the Relevance of Words

QOTD- What Are You Re-Reading?

Maybe I’m boring.

Maybe I’m too predictable.

Whatever the reason, there a few books that I read over and over again. Every year or so I’ll pick up Stephen King’s It or Alan Moore’s Watchmen and let myself be absorbed into the familiar stories as if I had never experienced them before.

It is not a rare thing to see the same books in the basket beside my toilet for years. Decades even.

Some people think it’s a strange habit. They don’t understand why I would pick up a book I’ve already finished. That’s the word they use, finished. As if it was a chore.

More interestingly, these are often the same people who buy their favorite movies on Blu Ray so they can watch them again and again.

Maybe I am strange for seeking out my most beloved books as often as I do, but I doubt that I am alone.

What are you re-reading? Why?

I have a couple of shelves of about forty books in the room I call my library (which contains many more books that see a lot less use). I read these books over and over because those particular stories ground me and remind me who I am. I know most of them off by heart, or almost, but it is comforting to revisit the same ground and know that in a life where everything around us is changing, all of the time, the stories themselves remain constant, and even though I may reinterpret some things as I grow older and my perspective shifts, my emotional response to the stimulus of re-reading something so familiar is predictable. Oddly, I would hesitate to call all of these books my favourites. Some of them make me cry, others laugh, but overall they remain part of my routine and a reliable means of adjusting my mood.
