The Poetry Question

Discovering the Relevance of Words

QOTD- To See, Or Not To See

I keep a book of photographs on my desk next to my computer. Just one of those little books of iconic images shot by famous photographers, the kind you used to see on coffee tables and pretentious dorm rooms in the ’90s. Not that I’m trying to be pretentious. I use my vocabulary for that. The reason I keep it there is that I find the images extremely inspiring. I prefer visual prompts to start me writing.

When I get stuck creatively, sometimes I can flip open that book to a random page and see a photo that stops my eye. I’ll stare at it, and it will slowly begin to flesh itself out, becoming like a panel in a comic book of the story that is growing up around it. Sometimes it will kick start what I’m doing, others times it will take me in a whole new direction. But it always gets me moving.

Do you find images or ideas more helpful as a writing prompt? Or both?
